Why I Write Stories Where Black Girls Are the Heroes

I recently had the chance to share a bit of my journey with VoyageATL. We talked about how I got started, what keeps me grounded, and why I write the kinds of stories I do.

At the heart of it all is this simple truth: I wanted to create the stories I wish I had growing up.

I didn’t see girls who looked like me in the fantasy and science fiction adventures I loved. Not as the hero. Not at the center of the story. And that stuck with me. So when I became a mom, I knew I had to change that. I wanted my daughter, and every girl like her, to feel seen. To feel powerful. To feel like she belongs in every world her imagination can reach.

That’s why I started Worlds To Discover.

In the interview, I open up about the early days, the risks, the lessons, and the wins. I also talk about how important it is to build stories around characters who reflect the kids reading them. Because when children see themselves in stories, they believe in what’s possible.
